    Cool Killer B pickup / STI pan instal DIY

    I installed a new STI pan and Killer B pickup for better oil control and peace-of-mind with the milage i'm racking up on the WRX and the horror stories I have heard about the factory pickup failing. I didn't want to be a statistic. And It wasn't too expensive to make happen.

    Parts needed

    STI dipstick (I bought it used off this forum)
    STI pan (I bought it used off this forum)
    STI oil baffle (new from Subaru like $8-10)
    Killer B pickup (Fred bean parts had the best price I found)


    my process

    1. remove intercooler (this is only to get to the pitch stop)
    2. undo pitch stop
    3. undo bolts on motor mounts holding them to the subframe
    4. jack up on transmission to gain 1-2" of clearance on back of pan for the rear 4 bolts on the pan
    5. remove driver side heat shield on manifold (if its still there)
    6. remover driver side motor mount (maybe not be needed)
    7. drop pan
    8. remove pickup
    9. remove baffle
    10. clean pan sealing surface on block
    11. install new part (I used lock tight on the pick-up and baffle bolts)


    pitch stop unhooked


    mount bolts removed


    4 rear bolts (you can't see them but they are there)


    raising motor - go slowly and be careful


    secret weapon


    removing 4 rear bolts


    pan removed


    baffle / pickup installed

    Nice write up, I thought about doing it myself when I bought mine but I was lazy and paid MKC to do it. The only issue I had was an oil leak that developed around the dipstick tube.

    I'm keeping a close eye on mine. it MIGHT have a SMALL leak on the rear of the pan. I'm keeping it clean and checking the under carriage often.

    It definitely isn't the easiest thing to do… but if it saves my motor its worth it.

    Anything that can save your motor is worth the cost and labor As long as its nothing that doesn't make any sense.

    Nice write-up! Universal socket adapter is a must have if you aren't going to pull the engine. Be VERY careful jacking the engine with a wood block like that, I've had those split on me before.

    And KB pickup is awesome and a great investment for a long lasting engine whether you're stock or heavily modified. Their 7 qt oil pans are also awesome but IMHO not worth the 700$ price tag. Probably good for the lateral g's on track cars though.

    I was stubborn and decided to not raise the engine. But with the angle sockets and extensions I was able to do it. I would more than likely do it your way next time.
