exhaust leak - gasket or debris on flange?

This weekend i had to adjust the heat shield around my muffler and in the process unbolted my exhaust. The gasket between my mid pipe and axle back was trash so i replaced it with a universal one as that was all that was available locally. I have an exhaust leak at that flange now despite trying to adjust it multiple times. Could this be do to the universal gasket or is there possibly debris from my old gasket on the flange?

Try some copper gasket maker and if that doesn't help then get an OEM gasket.

Thanks for the response. I've got an oem replacement gasket on the way. Can the copper gasket maker be used in concert with a gasket, or is it an either/or type of thing?

I've seen it used both ways, similar to RTV. In place of a gasket, and in addition to a gasket.

Did you scrape off the flange surfaces before you put on the new gasket?
