View Full Version : Special notice to 2003 WRX owners

This is just an FYI for any of you 2003 Bugeye guys/gals. If you don't already know, half-way through the model year Subaru changed the brake calipers and thus the pads as well.

Early built units had the same brakes as the 2002 model year. Late units had the newer "2003" brakes.

We've discovered that Subaru in its infinite wisdom decided to mix and match these parts as well. It is entirely possible for a 2003 WRX to have early fronts and late rears and vice versa.

So, before you order new pads from anyone check and make sure you are ordering the right ones!!

At least Subaru made things easier for later years :P

Yes, mine is one of the lucky ones. 2002 style rear calipers, late 2003 fronts calipers (I guess they had some 2002 calipers left over when my car came down the line).

thankx for the info. I'll have to look into mine would have never thought about that

Mine is really funny. It's my understanding that I'm running 02 Rears on my 2003, but I have upgraded Tokico front calipers, and slotted and drilled rotors all around.

IIRC it is related to the build date of your car.

The "early" sets are essentially the 2002 brakes, and on mine they are all early. I had no idea they would mix and match till now. That's seriously goofy.

This page explains it perfectly: http://www.knsbrakes.com/staticWRXPADSHAPE.php

The first thing to do is to locate and identify the build date of the vehicle. The month and year can be found on a metal plate in the drivers side door jamb down low and facing outward.

The pads I got:

D721 - "Early" front pad

Pad ears are approximately 13mm wide

Center caliper 'leg' has a divot

The pads I need:

D929 - "Late" front pad

Pad ears are approximately 10mm wide

Divots on caliper bracket

Yep, it's that 2 month window where they could be either/or that screwed us up.
